We've been interested in commercial Citroëns for some time now, and have acquired some nice examples for our collection as can be seen in the museum on this site.
When a friend wanted an azu, ripple bonnet ofcourse, we soon located one.
The car was actually bought unseen, the price was nice and chassis was said to be ok so how bad could it be?
Uhm, how bad?...
With the car back home it's checked over and given a wash.
It's a 1956 AZU.
It still has the body as found on the AU, with a flat front edge and 3 piece roof on the luggage compartment.
And there are no reinforcements above the rear door, it's completely flat there.
It has been sitting outside for some time and first it needs to dry out.
All the interesting bits are there and in good shape.
The body needs some work but looks worse then it really is.
It needs the normal stuff such as sills, floors and footwell.
Also the side reinforcements on the waistline of the luggage compartment have been removed and filled over.
But this is all pretty straight forward restoration work.
That's better...
After talking with the owner to be, it was decided to go for a sleeper.
Original appearance but with modern mechanicals.
The specification as proposed:
- 602cc 2cv6 engine.
- Modern drum brake gearbox.
- Dot 4 braking system with new components all round.
- 125x15 wheels and tyres.
The dual system master brake cylinder will be used.
This is too big to be fitted in the original position so the master cylinder position is changed from chassis mounted to bulkhead mounted.
The current footwell is rusty so this will be replaced by a modern type one with fittings for the master cylinder.
This unfortunatly means modern hanging pedals but there is no other way.
Fortunatly, the hanging pedals mean easy standard clutch operation on the modern gearbox.
Because of the new master cylinder position a normal 602 exhaust system can be used without any modifications.
