This car is an early AZU.
A = A type Citroën (2cv).
Z = 425cc engine, replacing the 375cc unit.
U = Utilitaire, commercial vehicle.
The car's history:
In 1962 the car was bought by a transportation company from the original owner.
They used the car as a full member of their fleet of trucks.
The company kept the car running up to 1998.
During this the front wings were replaced and the left front door was replaced with one from a painters van.
The text on this door was reproduced on the right front door.
To keep the car running, repairs were made to the floors.
The sills and floors are in need of repairs now.
In it's 43 years of professional use, the car managed to clock up 124.000 km.
Some interesting characteristics:
- No light on the speedometer (up to April 1955)
- Only 1 horn (up to January 1956)
- 3 piece steel roof with visible seams (up to December 1956)
- No edge on the front of the luggage compartment (up to December 1956)
- The ripples continue under the indicators (up to December 1956)
- Steel brake fluid reservoir (up to May 1957)
Some characteristics it should have but aren't there:
- Open springs (December 1954 - May 1955)
- Squared hole for driveshaft in wing (up to April 1956)
I doubt the wings on the car now are original but I'm 100% confident that the springs are original.
When bought the car it was still running.
But it wouldn't run very well so the ignition had to be replaced.
After removing the fan it was clear that the wiring was very bad.
The original isolation had hardened and cracked in many places and some vital connections only had 1 copper wire left.
The wiring has been largely replaced now.
To make the car decent, the sills and floors have to be replaced.
The brakes and steering are working but have to be looked over.
Spring 2003

Front reinforcement of the luggage floor. common problem
Interesting writing. 8 B 5 = 8th, february, 1955
All 4 frotteurs are gone, friction plates have disintegrated. Cleaned engine and gearbox.
Gearbox, before and after
Fresh supply of goodies
Luckily I've got help, there's still plenty to do.
Sills welded in, footwell cut out
Floors and footwell removed
Glad the footwell isn't that much wider then the car...
New front axle, stored for 50 years, cleaned and painted, fitted with the original arms.
New frotteurs, still need to be set up, gearbox with new brakes
Some welding, et voila, first floor is in.
Second floor
Right inner rear wing, spot the difference
Left is ok, right has another weak spot.
Rear inner wing repaired.
New floors, sills and footwell, done.
New floors, sills and footwell, done.
Front axle and gearbox ready for fitting.
New 77Ah 6 volt battery.
Outside to get the body off.
Found some more rot in the lower sections.
Unexpected disappointment, chassis needs major repairs as well.
All set for a new round of welding.
